Motivation follows action

Happy New Year! Back at it...

Every year a lot of people adopt the New Year's resolution of spending less time on social media. Ironically, they often announce this resolution on social media. We've all heard plenty about the negative elements of social media and, to be sure, there are real concerns. But, for all of the gossiping, celebrity worshipping, and time wasting that happens, it can also be really great.

Admittedly, I don't do many of the socials. I don't TikTok or Snapchat and I just today learned that Twitch is a thing. So I wouldn't exactly call myself an "influencer." (A ridiculous title if ever there was one.) I do have a Twitter account that I mostly use to read about sports or to yell at the Utah Transit Authority when the TRAX trains are delayed. But, like any good middle-aged person, I love me some Facebook.

Besides being able to stay in touch with friends I don't get to see regularly, the main reason I like it is to read the articles, essays, and memes that my friends share. I have some really smart Facebook friends, so I could easily fill a day reading all of the clever and worthwhile content they post.

One of those smart friends shared this post by author Brad Stulberg

I wasn't familiar with Stulberg before seeing this post but a lot of his writing seems pretty applicable to the work that we performing artists do.

As the pandemic raged through the fall semester of 2020, I found that a lot of students (and teachers) were struggling with motivation. People were finding it difficult to work toward goals, to practice regularly, and to just keep up with everyday work and obligations. When a survey from the University of Utah confirmed that more than half of our students and faculty were struggling with personal motivation, I decided to dedicate all of my spring semester blogs to exploring ways we can motivate ourselves, especially in the practice room. Given that the pandemic is still (or again) impacting our lives, Stulberg's commentary on motivation may be important to keep in mind as we head into another semester.

In your syllabus, I recommend that you divide your daily vocal practice into two or three different sessions. There are lots of reasons for that but the most pertinent one relates directly to Stulberg's post. If you know that your practice session is only set to be 15 minutes, you're more likely to go practice than if you have blocked off a full hour, which can feel overwhelming. The sneaky part is that once you get practicing, you start to find your groove. Suddenly, 15 minutes doesn't feel that long and you may decide to add on another 15 minutes and another 15 after that.

For this semester, you may experiment with the idea that you don't actually have to motivate yourself to practice every day. You just have to start practicing and see where it leads. Maybe the motivation will follow.

For this first blog, share two goals you have for the semester: one goal for what you want to have accomplished after the first month of school and one goal for where you want to be by the end of the semester.

Now go practice. Or just start practicing!

Sunrise on a new semester.

  1. 1. By the end of the first month of school, I'd like to have a new Golden Age song to sing, where I feel comfortable and confident with the phrasing and the acting that I am doing.

    2. By the end of the semester, I'd like to have an audition book that I feel is indicative of who I am as an artist and that has songs that I feel confident singing.

P.S. Brian, I think you should try TikTok.. yes, it's stupid at times but also very educational/informative at other times. Who knows, if you try long enough, you might find yourself on vocology tiktok........

  2. -By the end of this month, I'd like to have chosen my first 6 dem lab performance songs, submit all my self tapes on time, and to pick a better golden age song.
    - By the end of the semester, I'd like to have something either booked for the summer or a high paying job lined up. Additionally, I'd like to add 3-4 new songs that truly suit ME.

  4. -By the end of the first month, I want to have my first song memorized (lyrics, rhythms, notes) and have already delved into in-depth text work for my second song as well.
-By the end of the semester, I want to have my audition book set filled with songs I feel ready to present, as well as feel confident in my juries and have them memorized and decided before 3rd to last lesson.

I love the idea of just starting somewhere and hoping the motivation follows! Really helps on low energy days when all I want to do is sleep all day. Excited for this semester!

  6. Hi Brian!
My goal for the month is to have a practice schedule set that actually works for me. I also want to have multiple locations available to me where I feel comfortable to either practice or work on text in case the practice rooms are full.
My goal for the semester is to expand my range in a comfortable and consistent way. I want to feel more comfortable in my higher register and to have is sound comfortable too.

  7. Howdy Brian
For this month I am spending time trying to get a deeper connection to the text and overarching stories of my songs in my rep book. I want to embody my characters in a more real way.

For this semester I am going to focus on dynamics, I want to be capable of singing any way that I want/is wanted of me. I want to be capable of singing with any quality to its most extreme.

  8. Hi Brian!!

My goal for the month is to finish picking out my songs and learn them all!

My goal for the end of the semester is probably to expand my range and continue to explore more golden age material but also continue to expand on stuff like my chest voice. I want to be equally comfortable doing both of those.

  9. Hi brian! I agree with Aathaven, i think you might enjoy tiktok and could benefit a lot of young singers with your knowledge too.

    Anywho

My goal for the month is to get a solid routine for my new adjustment at a new place, i want to be able to have time for hw, the gym, personal time, and adequate sleep!

My goal for the end of semester is to have more solid monologues and audition material for any scenario! Singing as well as acting wise.

  10. Thank you, Brian, for a great read from the blog. Funny enough, Facebook is the app I use the least. I loved the post that your friend had so much I had to take a picture of it. It reminds me that we have to put in the work to see the result, and ultimately, we forget that the result is what holds our interest and feelings towards what we do. My first goal is to leap forward and do the work. I may not be in the right mind set for always doing the work, but the only one who can get it done is myself. and my second goal is to get that set schedule down. Like you talked about with me in the first week, having a set schedule is key to making sure that I hold myself accountable and continue growing and can even look back at the work and progress that I have accomplished.

    Thank you again for this,

    Alex Fish

    1. I can definitely attest to being one of those people that were hard to motivate in Fall 2020. Even during the second half of the last semester I felt really burnt out after an extremely busy 16 credit hour 2 months with a show on top of that. It didn't help that I kept getting sick last semester and then getting testing positive for Covid the day of Juries. This semester I think my main goal that I want to accomplish by the end of the semester is learning to balance my schedule. I'm taking 15 credit hours this semester and have a show from February to the beginning of April. Maybe that means just focusing on what I need to get done first and not worry about bigger projects that I've been assigned. A goal I have for the month is to not get sick. I think there was probably 4 weeks total last semester when I wasn't sick with something so if I can get through a month staying healthy I'll consider that a win.

  11. I love this. I really love the idea of having to start to get the chance to feel good. You have to give yourself the chance to do the things you want to do before deciding that you can't do them. I am working on giving myself the space to be who I am before deciding that I can't be anything.
